After work tonight, Sarah and I decided to check out De Lorenzo’s Tomato Pies for dinner. I had heard about it a lot about two years ago, when several of my friends began to frequent the restaurant – but I had never been until tonight.
It was amazing. First off, the pizza was great. I don’t think I’ve had pizza like that before. I know that I would have hated it as a kid because it had a lot of real tomatoes on it. But the tastes on the pizza were phenomenal. We had half pepperoni and half plain.
But, other than the pizza, which is really, really good, the reason you go there is for the experience. This is in the heart of Trenton (photo above is what you see around the restaurant), and it just feels very New Jersey. It’s a BYOB place (although, I forgot that until we got there) – and there is no bathroom and no menu. Yup. No bathroom – and no menu. I had heard about the woman who takes your order – but it was great. She just walked up to us – with a little memo-pad and a pencil and looked at you. You really needed to know what you were getting before you go into the place. She didn’t look like she’d want to answer any questions, or tell you exactly what was included in each of the pies. Luckily, we knew what we wanted before we went in, thanks to this helpful review.
So if you’re around the Princeton/Trenton area – you really do need to check out De Lorenzo’s Tomato Pies. Next on our list is a place that I never went to during my two years in Princeton: Chuck’s Spring Street Cafe.
