Emergent Convention: Bluetooth Oops

May 18, 2004 Adam Walker Cleaveland

So I’m sitting in Doug Pagitt’s Critical Concerns Course, playing around with my Bluetooth phone and PowerBook, and I decide to take a picture of Doug “doing his thing.” Then I decided, “I think I’ll send this picture to my computer.” When I did that, my Nokia3650 picked up 2 other computers in the room who I could send the picture to. I looked at the names and one said, “Doug’s Computer.” [Now, don’t ask me why I didn’t think that it could have been Doug Pagitt’s Computer, considering his was close to mine, and I know he does Bluetooth stuff as well] So, it was toward the end of our session and Doug was reading a quote from the screen (connected to this PowerBook) and I clicked SEND to Doug’s Computer, while looking down at my phone. All of a sudden, people were laughing, and I hear Doug say, “Oh, someone’s sending me a file” and I look up and see it says, “Lil Cleave: Incoming File Transfer.” And then I realized – doh! That was Doug Pagitt’s computer and I just put my “Lil Cleave” up on his screen. That’s embarrassing. I apologized afterwards and said I didn’t think it was his computer, and he just said, “Whatever – you’re just an Apple freak.”

Only a few weeks into my PowerBook G4 and I’ve been called an Apple freak. Fun.

People ask what the emerging church is about??? It’s all about Macs. Both Tim Keel and Doug Pagitt had their PowerBook G4s hooked up, and there was a wonderful group of iBook and PowerBook users in our session: ahhh, the beauty of it……
