Emergent Convention: The Postmodern Parish

May 22, 2004 Adam Walker Cleaveland

Last fall I ran across a book called “The Postmodern Parish” by Jim Kitchens, a PC(USA) pastor at Second Presbyterian Church in Nashville. I arranged to get together for lunch with him, and my friend Kevin and I, and Jim and Junie (a Vanderbilt Divinity School seminary intern working at Jim’s church) broke bread together at Subway a few blocks away from the Convention Center. It was a good time sharing stories with one another. Jim’s book is good; basically just an intro/entry-level book into the “emerging church” conversation, but he comes at it from a mainline perspective, which is good, since a majority of the other books (esp. from emergent/YS) would be from a more evangelical perspective. For you mainliners (esp PC(USA)ers), you may want to check out the book.
