Nantucket Baskets and Handbags

November 28, 2004 Adam Walker Cleaveland

Tropical Enterprises, Inc.: makers of the Original Farnum Nantucket Handbag. I’m not sure if everyone knows my family has a business or not, but here is my plug. We have a pretty small, select market – but in our small little niche in the women’s handbag business, we’re good.

It was my granddaddy’s business and he ran it until the day he passed away, and the business is still going strong 30 years later. Basically we make women’s Nantucket Baskets. So, you can see why we have a pretty select/small market to advertise to – but for those who know that a real/genuine Nantucket basket will run for thousands of dollars, our very real looking replica for a couple hundred…well, that’s a big deal.

I spent Thanksgiving with my uncle and his wife, who are running the business out here in Rhode Island now. I got to see what “Tropical East Coast ” looks like, which is a bit more elaborate than my dad and his part of the business in a little room above our garage in Chehalis, WA. It’s always been a bit of a running joke in the family as to “who is going to take over the business…?” Well, my uncle and wife, and other uncle and dad have it taken care of so far…but that still begs the question…what after them? How do I feel about being a “bag man” – my granddaddy was known as the Bag Man of Naples, FL (where Tropical was based until he passed away). Well, that is a long ways off. But until then – if you know anyone who would be interested in a handbag like this (they come in all sorts of styles, colors and are incredibly customizable), go to our website, pass the website around and share the word about Tropical Enterprises.
