Why not? I mean, that’s really the question. Why would anyone choose NOT to eat sheep stomach, intestines or brain? There are times when I wish you could communicate smells over a blog – this is one of those times. Sheep stomach has a very…well, I should say, unique smell to it (again, I have to be careful because it was our Director’s mom who cooked this, who I live with, so I need to be nice about this…). No, it really didn’t taste that bad at all, although again, I primarily stuck to the long, skinny ones (in the picture above) which were the intestines.
Apparently it is a really big deal to have this meal. We had a bit group of people over, and drank Arak (which apparently you HAVE to do because it helps the sheep stomach settle in your own stomach…what is Arak? go here), and had a big family lunch. It was quite the experience, as you can imagine.
The picture to the right is, naturally, the sheep’s head, with the eye being in the middle. I mean, why wouldn’t you have the sheep’s head on the table? It was pretty amusing. I did eat a little bit of the jaw, but my roommate was much braver (or, maybe it was just his strategic positioning next to our director, who kept putting things on his plate) and ate some jaw, brain and a host of other sheep body parts. It was really an incredible experience all around. They keep asking me if I liked it, and I said it was definitely an experience. It didn’t really taste too bad, but I don’t think I’ll be having it again.
I think our host-mom felt a little bad for us – she’s making spaghetti tonight. :)
Anyone else eaten sheep stomach before, or something similar?
