I love this. I’m sure many of you have seen this around by now, but I think it’s great [ht Marko]. And perhaps, timely, as many were at Ash Wednesday services this past evening and as we officially enter into Lent. Those of us who are very active on Twitter do follow a ton of people. I like to think that my list is fairly small but I am currently following 154 people. I enjoy staying connected with these folks: even if it’s just knowing the little random things that are going on their lives – but I do follow them…
…as we enter into these time of Lent, this time of preparation, of walking alongside Jesus during his last days and his Passion, we are called to follow him. Not just in that “sure I’d like to keep up with him” way that many of us do with people we follow on Twitter. But rather in that whole-hearted, deeply-passionate, uninhibited kind of way. We are called to “repent and believe the gospel” (the phrase I said over and over again tonight as we put the ash on people’s foreheads).
While I’ve seen a few people giving up internet-related things for Lent, for better or for worse, I don’t think I could do that. Too much of the work I do is tied to the wonderful interwebs. But I can think more about how I am following Jesus during this month, as opposed to the way in which I follow everyone else.
