Officium & My Mom

March 5, 2004 Adam Walker Cleaveland

I’m loving my mother right about now. One Christmas in high school, I got this CD from my mom called Officium (put together by Hilliard Ensemble and Jan Garbarek) – we put it in the CD player, and my dad and I were like…”Grreat. Monks and saxophone….”

I listened to it on and off, but kept it. Since then I’ve become a huge Hilliard Ensemble fan, and have another of their albums, Lassus. So the point of this post?

In both Jonny’s book Alternative Worship and Steve Case’s book “The Book of Uncommon Prayer”, they mention this odd CD, “Officium” as recommended music for alt.worship and more meditative events. Of course, it’s been the CD we’ve been using for .bE since last summer when we started .bE — thanks mom! How did she know I’d be needing meditative/contemplative music for alt.worship events I’d put together when living in southern Idaho…?
